Duties are ours, events are the Lord's; when our faith goeth to meddle with events, and to hold a court (if I may so speak) upon God's Providence, and beginneth to say, "How wilt Thou do this or that?" we lose ground; we have nothing to do there; it is our part to let the Almighty exercise His own office, and steer His own helm; there is nothing left us, but to see how we may be approved of Him, and how we may roll the weight of our weak souls, in well-doing, upon Him who is God omnipotent, and when what we thus essay miscarrieth, it shall neither be our sin nor cross.

Something New...

Last night I asked my Heavenly Father
About the way I should go.
I said, Lord I can't see Your path before me,
All I can see is rocky road.
So take me through.
And He spoke to me these
Words of simple truth.

And I will lead the blind
By the way they do not know
In paths they do not know I will guide them.
I will make darkness into light before them
And rugged places into plains.

These are the things I will do, I will do, I will do
And I will not leave them undone.
These are the things I will do, I will do, I will do
And I will not leave them undone.

Well I'm only one, of countless thousands
Who have walked upon pilgrim's way.
And whenever I thirst,
I'll seek my Lord first
And listen to what He will say.

Lord, let me hear You, and He spoke to me
These words of simple truth,
Behold I will do something new,
Now it will spring forth,
And you will not be aware of it.
I will even make a roadway in the wilderness,
And rivers in the desert.

These are the things I will do, I will do, I will do
And I will not leave them undone.
These are the things I will do, I will do, I will do
And I will not leave them undone.

Spiritual Growth and Maturity

The open secret of healthy spiritual growth is to know and settle down upon this fact as set forth in Romans 8:28 and 29. When we see that all things are working together to make us more and more like the LORD JESUS we will not be frustrated and upset when some of these 'things' are hard, difficult to understand, and often contain an element of death.  We will be able to rest in our LORD JESUS and say to our FATHER, "THY will be done." And our constant attitude of faith will be, "Though HE slay me, yet will I trust HIM" (Job 13:14). This is our matriculation to spiritual maturity!

A Piece of Courage

The Lord redeemeth the souls of his servants: and none that trust in him, shall perish.
~ Psalm 34:22

Aslan's instructions always work, there are no exceptions.

(as quoted by C.S. Lewis)

The true follower of Christ will not ask, "If I embrace this truth, what will it cost me?" Rather he will say, "This is truth. God help me to walk in it, let come what may!"

Middle of the Week Encouragement

Therefore then, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us, looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Just think of Him Who endured from sinners such grievous opposition and bitter hostility against Himself [reckon up and consider it all in comparison with your trials], so that you may not grow weary or exhausted, losing heart and relaxing and fainting in your minds.

Patience in a Dark Way

The way may at times seem dark, but light will arise, if thou trust in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him. That light may sometimes show hard things to be required, but do not be distressed if thy heart should rebel; bring thy unwillingness and disobedience to Him, in the faith that He will give thee power to overcome, for He cannot fail. "Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world," so keep close to Him, and the victory will be won. But do not, I beseech thee, neglect anything that is required, for disobedience brings darkness; and do not reason or delay, but simply follow the leadings of the Holy Spirit, and He will guide thee into all peace.

This Day...

Father, this day may I do nothing to tarnish your name... may the teaching of kindness be on my tongue... may the sweet peace that passes understanding keep my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.... may I be both thankful and humble... both undisturbed and undisturbing... I humbly ask this in Jesus Name... may the glory of the Lord be seen in me... Amen...

Do the Next Thing

One week of homekeeping laid out.

DO not yield to the temptation of looking at everything at once, as if everything would happen at once, and all the events of the day be crowded into an hour. Do not thus forecast, but take each thing as it comes to you, and look upon it as the present expression of the will of God concerning you; then regard the next in the same way, and thus receive your day piece by piece from Him who will remember always when He gives you work to do, that you need strength to do it.
Often, when you have almost fainted in spirit, the thought comes, "If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, what shalt thou do with the horsemen?" Put it from you, it is a faithless thought; if you need more strength, you will have it, be sure of that; or the call to greater exertion may never come to you. Your business is with the present; leave the future in His hands who will be sure to do the best, the very best for you.

What Is Best For Us

WE know not precisely what is best for us. We know not what will make us truly happy. We know not what will help us best in our struggle against temptations. And if we were to try to make a distinction between our mere passing wishes and that which our souls really needed, we should utterly fail. But we need not try. Let us take all our wishes, all our longings, all the promptings of our consciences, to the feet of our Father. He will hear and He will do. He will hear all we say. He will know what parts of our prayer are best for us to have, and what are not. And He will give us what His fatherly love will choose. And therefore to all our prayers we will add, "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

A Key to Contentment ...

Be content to go on quietly. When you discover somewhat in yourself which is earthly and imperfect, be patient while you strive to cast it out. Your perceptions will grow,--at first God will show you very obvious stumbling-blocks;--be diligent in clearing these away, and do not aim at heights to which you are not yet equal. Leave all to God, and while you earnestly desire that He would purify your intention, and seek to work with Him to that end, be satisfied with the gradual progress He sets before you; and remember that He often works in ways unseen by us.

Tried, Refined, and Purified

Psalm 66

To the Chief Musician. A song. A Psalm.
 1MAKE A joyful noise unto God, all the earth;    2Sing forth the honor and glory of His name; make His praise glorious!
    3Say to God, How awesome and fearfully glorious are Your works! Through the greatness of Your power shall Your enemies submit themselves to You [with feigned and reluctant obedience].
    4All the earth shall bow down to You and sing [praises] to You; they shall praise Your name in song. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!
    5Come and see the works of God; see how [to save His people He smites their foes; He is] terrible in His doings toward the children of men.
    6He turned the sea into dry land, they crossed through the river on foot; there did we rejoice in Him.
    7He rules by His might forever, His eyes observe and keep watch over the nations; let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!
    8Bless our God, O peoples, give Him grateful thanks and make the voice of His praise be heard,
    9Who put and kept us among the living, and has not allowed our feet to slip.
    10For You, O God, have proved us; You have tried us as silver is tried, refined, and purified.
    11You brought us into the net (the prison fortress, the dungeon); You laid a heavy burden upon our loins.
    12You caused men to ride over our heads [when we were prostrate]; we went through fire and through water, but You brought us out into a broad, moist place [to abundance and refreshment and the open air].
    13I will come into Your house with burnt offerings [of entire consecration]; I will pay You my vows,
    14Which my lips uttered and my mouth promised when I was in distress.
    15I will offer to You burnt offerings of fat lambs, with rams consumed in sweet-smelling smoke; I will offer bullocks and he-goats. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!
    16Come and hear, all you who reverently and worshipfully fear God, and I will declare what He has done for me!
    17I cried aloud to Him; He was extolled and high praise was under my tongue.
    18If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me;(A)
    19But certainly God has heard me; He has given heed to the voice of my prayer.
    20Blessed be God, Who has not rejected my prayer nor removed His mercy and loving-kindness from being [as it always is] with me.

~ Amplified Version

We pray for blessings
We pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep
We pray for healing, for prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering
All the while, You hear each spoken need
Yet love is way too much to give us lesser things

‘Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You're near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise

We pray for wisdom
Your voice to hear
We cry in anger when we cannot feel You near
We doubt your goodness, we doubt your love
As if every promise from Your Word is not enough
All the while, You hear each desperate plea
And long that we'd have faith to believe

When friends betray us
When darkness seems to win
We know that pain reminds this heart
That this is not our home

What if my greatest disappointments
Or the aching of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can't satisfy
What if trials of this life
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are your mercies in disguise

DO not try only to abstain from sin, but strive, by God's grace, to gain the opposite grace. If thou wouldest not slip back into sin, thou must stretch forward to Christ and His holiness. It is a dull, heavy, dreary, toilsome way, just to avoid sin. Thou wouldest not simply not be impatient; thou wouldest long to be like thy Lord, who was meek and lowly of heart. Thou wouldest not only not openly murmur; thou wouldest surely long, like the beloved Apostle, to rest on Jesus' breast, and will what He wills.

Psalm 77

 Psalm 77

Comfort in Trouble from Recalling God's Mighty Deeds.
For the choir director; according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of Asaph.
    1My voice rises to God, and I will (A)cry aloud;
         My voice rises to God, and He will hear me.
    2In the (B)day of my trouble I sought the Lord;
         (C)In the night my (D)hand was stretched out [a]without weariness;
         My soul (E)refused to be comforted.
    3When I remember God, then I am (F)disturbed;
         When I (G)sigh, then (H)my spirit grows faint. Selah.
    4You have held my eyelids open;
         I am so troubled that I (I)cannot speak.
    5I have considered the (J)days of old,
         The years of long ago.
    6I will remember my (K)song in the night;
         I (L)will meditate with my heart,
         And my spirit ponders:
    7Will the Lord (M)reject forever?
         And will He (N)never be favorable again?
    8Has His (O)lovingkindness ceased forever?
         Has His (P)promise come to an end forever?
    9Has God (Q)forgotten to be gracious,
         Or has He in anger withdrawn His (R)compassion? Selah.
    10Then I said, "(S)It is my grief,
         That the (T)right hand of the Most High has changed."
    11I shall remember the (U)deeds of the LORD;
         Surely I will (V)remember Your wonders of old.
    12I will (W)meditate on all Your work
         And muse on Your deeds.
    13Your way, O God, is (X)holy;
         (Y)What god is great like our God?
    14You are the (Z)God who works wonders;
         You have (AA)made known Your strength among the peoples.
    15You have by Your power (AB)redeemed Your people,
         The sons of Jacob and (AC)Joseph. Selah.
    16The (AD)waters saw You, O God;
         The waters saw You, they were in anguish;
         The deeps also trembled.
    17The (AE)clouds poured out water;
         The skies (AF)gave forth a sound;
         Your (AG)arrows flashed here and there.
    18The (AH)sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind;
         The (AI)lightnings lit up the world;
         The (AJ)earth trembled and shook.
    19Your (AK)way was in the sea
         And Your paths in the mighty waters,
         And Your footprints may not be known.
    20You (AL)led Your people like a flock
         By the hand of (AM)Moses and Aaron.

The Divine Weaver

My life is but a weaving
Between my Lord and me;
I cannot choose the colors
He worketh steadily

Oftimes He weaveth sorrow
And I, in foolish pride,
Forget that He seeth the upper,
And I the under side.

Not till the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly,
Shall God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful
In the Weaver's skillful hand,
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern of His hand.

There Is No Other Way

In order to get to a place called Laity Lodge in Texas you have to drive into a riverbed. The road takes you down a steep, rocky hill into a canyon and straight into the water. There is a sign at the water's edge which says, "Yes. You drive in the river."

One who has made up his mind to go to the uttermost with God will come to a place as unexpected and perhaps looking as impossible to travel as that riverbed looks. He may glance around for an alternative route, but if he wants what God promises His faithful ones, he must go straight into the danger. There is no other way.

The written word is our direction. Trust it. Obey it. Drive in the river and get to Laity Lodge. Moses said to Israel, "I offer you the choice of life or death, blessing or curse. Choose life and then you and your descendants will live; love the Lord your God, obey him, and hold fast to him: that is life for you."

When you take the risk of obedience, you find solid rock beneath you--and markers, evidence that someone has traveled this route before. "The Lord your God will cross over at your head... he will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not be discouraged or afraid" (Deuteronomy 30:19, 20; 31:3, 8, NEB). It's what the old gospel song puts so simply:

"Trust and obey, for there's no other way
To be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.

--John H. Sammis

~ Elisabeth Elliot

Disclaimer: Due to the fact that I used one of their headers, I have added a link to Laity Lodge's site. I do not know of anything about Laity Lodge other than what Elizabeth Elliot has mentioned in the above. :)

Psalm 73

1TRULY GOD is [only] good to Israel, even to those who are upright and pure in heart.

2But as for me, my feet were almost gone, my steps had well-nigh slipped.

3For I was envious of the foolish and arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

4For they suffer no violent pangs in their death, but their strength is firm.

5They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they smitten and plagued like other men.

6Therefore pride is about their necks like a chain; violence covers them like a garment [like a long, luxurious robe].

7Their eyes stand out with fatness, they have more than heart could wish; and the imaginations of their minds overflow [with follies].

8They scoff, and wickedly utter oppression; they speak loftily [from on high, maliciously and blasphemously].

9They set their mouths against and speak down from heaven, and their tongues swagger through the earth [invading even heaven with blasphemy and smearing earth with slanders].

10Therefore His people return here, and waters of a full cup [offered by the wicked] are [blindly] drained by them.

11And they say, How does God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?

12Behold, these are the ungodly, who always prosper and are at ease in the world; they increase in riches.

13Surely then in vain have I cleansed my heart and washed my hands in innocency.

14For all the day long have I been smitten and plagued, and chastened every morning.

15Had I spoken thus [and given expression to my feelings], I would have been untrue and have dealt treacherously against the generation of Your children.

16But when I considered how to understand this, it was too great an effort for me and too painful

17Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood [for I considered] their end.

18[After all] You do set the [wicked] in slippery places; You cast them down to ruin and destruction.

19How they become a desolation in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors!

20As a dream [which seems real] until one awakens, so, O Lord, when You arouse Yourself [to take note of the wicked], You will despise their outward show.

21For my heart was grieved, embittered, and in a state of ferment, and I was pricked in my heart [as with the sharp fang of an adder].

22So foolish, stupid, and brutish was I, and ignorant; I was like a beast before You.

23Nevertheless I am continually with You; You do hold my right hand.

24You will guide me with Your counsel, and afterward receive me to honor and glory.

25Whom have I in heaven but You? And I have no delight or desire on earth besides You.

26My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the Rock and firm Strength of my heart and my Portion forever.

27For behold, those who are far from You shall perish; You will destroy all who are false to You and like [spiritual] harlots depart from You.

28But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God and made Him my refuge, that I may tell of all Your works.

Psalm 107:28-30

Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and He brought them out of their distress.

He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the waves of the sea were hushed.

They were glad when it grew calm,
and He guided them to their desired haven.

Give Me, O Lord, a Heart of Grace,

GIVE me, O Lord, a heart of grace,

A voice of joy, a shining face,

That I may show where'er I turn

Thy love within my soul doth burn!

A tenderness for all that stray,

With strength to help them on the way

A cheerfulness, a heavenly mirth,

Brightening my steps along the earth!

Renewing Fruit

"The branch cannot bear fruit of itself."
--John 15:4

How did you begin to bear fruit? It was when you came to Jesus and cast yourselves on His great atonement, and rested on His finished righteousness. Ah! what fruit you had then! Do you remember those early days? Then indeed the vine flourished, the tender grape appeared, the pomegranates budded forth, and the beds of spices gave forth their smell. Have you declined since then? If you have, we charge you to remember that time of love, and repent, and do thy first works. Be most in those engagements which you have experimentally proved to draw you nearest to Christ, because it is from Him that all your fruits proceed. Any holy exercise which will bring you to Him will help you to bear fruit.

The sun is, no doubt, a great worker in fruit-creating among the trees of the orchard: and Jesus is still more so among the trees of His garden of grace. When have you been the most fruitless? Has not it been when you have lived farthest from the Lord Jesus Christ, when you have slackened in prayer, when you have departed from the simplicity of your faith, when your graces have engrossed your attention instead of your Lord, when you have said, "My mountain standeth firm, I shall never be moved"; and have forgotten where your strength dwells--has not it been then that your fruit has ceased?

Some of us have been taught that we have nothing out of Christ, by terrible abasements of heart before the Lord; and when we have seen the utter barrenness and death of all creature power, we have cried in anguish, "From Him all my fruit must be found, for no fruit can ever come from me." We are taught, by past experience, that the more simply we depend upon the grace of God in Christ, and wait upon the Holy Spirit, the more we shall bring forth fruit unto God. Oh! to trust Jesus for fruit as well as for life.

The Calm Spirit of Christ

Today is moving day. There will be plenty of reason for fretting and stewing, impatience, and turbulence. I am one who seems to feel that unless I do things or unless they are done my way, they will not be done right, and the day will disintegrate. But I have been watching the sea--very turbulent this morning because of a tropical storm hundreds of miles away--and I remember Him whose word was enough to calm it.

Speak that word to me today, dear Lord: peace. Let your calm spirit, through the many potentially rough minutes of this day, in every task, say to my soul, Be still. Even this day's chaos, with all its clutter and exertion, will be ordered by your quiet power if my heart is subject to your word of peace. Thank You, Lord.
